Mason County, WV Do you have any Greathouse kith and kin who resided in Mason County, WV? Mason County Chronology Mason County was created by Virginia from Kanawha in 1804. Mason exchanged with Kanawha in 1817. Ohio River and its islands, previously unassigned to particular counties, were declared to be part of the adjacent Virginia counties, including Mason [not mapped] in 1820. The boundary between Mason and Kanawha was clarified [no discernible change] in 1824. Mason lost to creation of Jackson in 1831. Mason lost to creation of Putnam in 1848. Mason separated from Virginia and became a county in the state of West Virginia in 1863. Mason lost to Jackson in 1867.
