Footnotes
1) At the time when this event occurred it is important to note that the Julan calendar was in use, so the first day of Year 1746 was 25 Mar 1746, while the first day of Year 1747 was 25 Mar 1747.
2) Herman Greathouse was named as a witness for the Schellmeier baptism at St. Michael's Lutheran Church, Germantown on 2 Jun 1745.
3) Rahel [Rachel], daughter of Herman and Maria Grothausen, was born on 20 Feb 1746, baptized on 12 Apr 1747 at St. Michael's Lutheran Church, Germantown, PA. While Rachel Greathouse was born on 20 Feb 1746/7, she would have been conceived 9 months prior, in May 1746.
4) From the conception of Rachel Greathouse occuring in May 1746, the marriage of Herman Greathouse & Mary Stull can be derived as probably occurring before Rachel was conceived. Therefore, Herman & Mary Stull Greathouse were probably married near Elizabeth Town, present-day Hagerstown, MD, where Mary Stull would have been residing with her father John Stull before May 1746.
5) In the following month, on 9 Jun 1746, Herman Greathouse co-witnessed the debt payment between Abraham Teagarden and Johnaton Hedges with Daniel Cresap, who resided in Frederick County, VA opposite the Potomac River from Old Town, MD.
6) By 12 Apr 1747, Herman Greathouse, his wife Mary Stull and their daughter Rachel had returned to Springfield, Philadelphia County, PA, where Rachel Greathouse was baptized at St. Michael's Lutheran Church, Germantown, with sponsors as George & Barbara Rieger [Rex].
7) Herman, his wife Mary Stull and their daughter Rachel Greathouse appears to have returned to the area of Elizabeth Town, present-day Hagerstown, MD, by 17 Apr 1749 when John Stull created his will, in which he named Mary Greathouse as a daughter and Rachel Greathouse as a grand-daughter.
8) As demonstrated by the footnotes for this event, the threads of Herman, his wife Mary Stull and their daugther Rachel Greathouse's presence at St. Michael's Lutheran Church, Germantown; Elizabeth Town, present-day Hagerstown, MD; and Frederick County, VA, opposite the Potomac River from Old Town, MD; between 1745 and 1749, have been tightly woven into a Greathouse Cord which will not easily break.

On 9 June 1746 Abraham Teagarden wrote a promissory note to Jonas? [Johnathan Hedges]. It was witnessed by "Herman" Greathouse and Daniel Cresap (Ohio Company Papers, 1736-1813, dar192502, Box 3, File 13). This was the earliest record found which indicated that Harman Greathouse was in the Upper Potomac region. This transaction probably occurred on the North Branch of the Potomac.
