1770, Aug 16 - Communion: William Grotthouse, St. John's Lutheran Church, Easton

Excerpts from Historic Pennsylvania Church and Town Records. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania: Historical Society of Pennsylvania. Reel: 532. Pages 407-408:

"Verzeichnis derer die zur Beicht und zum heiligen Abendmahl gehen."
[Translation: "List of those who go to Confession and to Holy Communion."]

"Zum heil. Abendmal haben [seih gemal det auf 10ten p. Trivihal?] und dn. 18. August 1770."
[Translation: "Those who came to Holy Communion on the 10th of --?-- and the 18th of August 1770."]

"Jungen Leute, die das 1ste mal zum heil. Abendmal gehen."
[Translation: "Young people who go to Holy Communion for the first time."])

"Zum heiligen Abendmahl haben [a seih gemalist auch?] den 7ten Jany 1771." [Translation: probably "Those who came to Holy Communion on the 7th of January 1771."]

2) Either this record represents a William Grothouse, born 2 Aug 1748, who was preparing for confirmation at age 22 in 1770, or a William Grothouse, born between 1750 and 1752, who was preparing for confirmation at age 18-20 in 1770.

1) Define: CATECHUMEN, n. One who is in the first rudiments of Christianity; one who is receiving instruction and preparing himself for baptism. These were anciently the children of believing parents, or pagans not fully initiated in the principles of the Christian religion. They were admitted to this state by the imposition of hands, and the sign of the cross.
