John Greathouse Jr born about 1811 - death date unknown.

John Greathouse Jr., a son of John and Sarah McDade Greathouse,was born about 1811. His relationship to John and Sarah Greathouse is established through the estate settlement of his father John. He married Phoebe Casto February 12, 1835, said to be a daughter of George and Sarah Ours Casto.  It has been said that she was born in 1818 and died in 1877.  None of the dates for birth or death are fully documented.  His date of birth and location is noted in "History of Roane County" by William Bishop, but no documentation is cited. Marriage record date was taken from a microfilm of Jackson County marriages from  1831 to 1849 collecting Casto data. This shows: John Greathouse married Phobe Casto 12 Feb 1835. 

From " Pioneers of Jackson County" by John A House,  1906: "John Greathouse commonly called Prophet John lived on Spring Creek". 

From "History of Roane County West Virginia" by William H Bishop, 1927:  " There was another Greathouse called John, a brother of William Greathouse, who came about the same date, he was a son of John Greathouse, born in Mason County March 15, 1811, served as a soldier in 1812, married Phoebe Carte, and at an early date settled on Spring Creek." This sentence is confusing because the reference "served as soldier in 1812" refers to John Sr, not John Jr.  It is believed that this is the same John Greathouse who married Lydia Haught in Wirt Co 3 November 1880, and his age is shown as 68. If correct, then he would have been born about 1812 and she would have been born 1840.  There is a Lydia Greathouse, who is a widow, showing in the Burning Springs District of Wirt County in the census of 1910 showing as age 71.

At Civil War Records which cites the source as: The Virginia Regimental Histories Series, 1987,  we find the following John Greathouse referenced.  If the information is correct, then we have a date of birth and  information about his military service.

I can find no further census records for John after 1870.

It has been said that he is the John Greathouse buried in the Hodam Cemetery in the Grace Community of Roane County, WV with a death date of 28 Dec 1901. I have transcribed several stones from that cemetery, but I did not see this stone. And a death record for him has not been located.

Children believed to be those of John and Phoebe: George W 'Gus', Edward M, John D, Louisa, David, Granville, James, Phoebe, Marcellus, Wesley and William Frank.

George W "Gus" Greathouse, according to census reports was born May 1836 in Jackson County, VA, and died 30 Dec 1901. He is showing in his parents household in the 1850 census age He married Sarah Slaughter 23 Jan 1859 in Roane Co, VA (Source: Wes Cochran, Roane Co, VA (WV) Marriages, March1988). She was born Apr 1838 the daughter of James & Rachel Slaughter.

George appears in the 1850, 1860 and 1880 censuses of Wirt and Roane Counties. The 1880 census in Roane shows: Greathouse G. white male, age 44 Farmer ; Sarah white female age 43 Wife Keeping House; Louisa age 20 Daughter At Home; Mary E. age 18 Daughter At Home; Ambrose age 14 Son Farm Laborer; George L. age 11 Son At Home; Ida M. age 9 Daughter ; Nancy F. age 7 Daughter; Robert L. age 5 Son; Sarah A. age 1 Daughter.

Children: Ambrose Edward Greathouse born 14 May 1865 in Reedy WV and died 23 Mar 1940 in Roane County, WV buried at Hodam Cemetery. He married Rachel Belle Powell daughter of Melvin and Malenda Huff Powell. Their children were Charles, Ottie Mae, Harry, Clarence and Herbert James Greathouse. Nancy Fidellia Greathouse (Source: Roane County WV Family History 1989, page 75.) was born 28 Mar 1873 in Roane Co, WV, and died 05 Nov 1956. She married George Washington Bennett 27 February 1895 in Roane Co, WV. He was born 30 Dec 1872 in Roane Co son of James Thomas & Caroline Greenleaf Bennett, and died 23 Jan 1950. Children were James Leamond, Onie Cecil, Samuel Robert and Clarinda Jane Bennett.

Edward M Greathouse was born 15 Sep 1839. He married Samantha Pickens 04 Sep 1862 in Jackson Co, WV, daughter of John Pickens and Mary Lawrence. She was born about 1840 in Meigs Co, OH "History of Roane County" by Bishop reports that Edward M Greathouse, born September 15, 1839, married Samantha Pickens in Jackson County, September 4, 1862. She was born in Meigs County, Ohio, daughter of John and Mary (Lawrence) Pickens. Edward M. cleared out a large farm in northwest Spencer District; he served one year in the State Guards of the Civil War; was a Baptist preacher during the latter years of his life; he left one son Leonidas B Greathouse who taught school for some years, and has been elected and served some two or three terms of four years each, as county surveyor; he is now (1926) serving as county surveyor.

Children: Leonidas "Lee" Bonaparte Greathouse was born 27 May 1867 in Roane Co, WV, and died 20 Aug 1940 in Roane Co, WV 73 y 2 m 24 d burial Spencer Cemetery. He married Rebecca Jane Roberts 23 Nov 1888 in Roane Co, WV (Source: Wes Cochran, Roane Co, VA (WV) marriages, March 1988). She was born about 1868. Children of Leonidas Greathouse and Rebecca Roberts are: Edgar Emerson, Daniel Dale, Leonidas "Lark", Segil Shirley, Obin Ohse, Zirkle Zane Greathouse.

John D Greathouse according to Ohio death records was born 13 Sep 1842 in Spencer, Jackson County, WV and died 14 Aug 1924 in Sutton, Meigs County, OH.

It is believe that this is the John D in 1870 census of Meigs Co, Ohio with wife Ann H and daughter Mary F age 3 born in Ohio reported on June 8 1900. John D born 1841, married 34 years, born in WV and both parents born in WV. Wife's name is unreadable - born in 1849; Son Earl J age 21.

David Greathouse was born 02 Aug 1848 in Spencer, Jackson Co, WV; died 03 Aug 1921 in Columbus, Franklin, Ohio. He married Virginia, last name unknown. She was born about. 1854.
It is believe that this is the David and family appearing in the 1880 Census Meigs Ohio: David b. about 1848, Birthplace: West Virginia - mother and father born in WV; occupation cooper.
Dave age 32, Virginia age 26, Wilber age 8, Carrie age 4 and Myrtle age 1. He might also be the in 1910 Census Meigs OH born in WV age 62, Virginia age 56, George age 25, son. Granville Greathouse is believed to have been born 16 Nov 1849 in VA; died 29 May 1936 in Jackson, WV. (Source: WV History and Culture Files, Death Certificate 85 years 6 month 13 days - born Nov 16, 1849 in (W)VA died of pneumonia - Burial Pleasant View May 30 1935 Ravenswood WV.). He married Roena Alice Barber 05 Jun 1878 in Jackson Co, WV. She was born 25 Dec 1859 in Meigs County, Ohio daughter of John Scott and Betty Rose Heddie Barber, and died 08 May 1965 in Wayne, MI.

Minerva Greathouse was born 16 May 1883, and died 13 Sep 1913. She married Ira Harry Clark. He was born About. 1883, and died 14 Nov 1919. Child of Minerva Greathouse and Ira Clark is: Harry Raymond Clark, born 23 May 1905.

James Greathouse, born 1854. Have not confirmed any information regarding James.

Phoebe Greathouse, born 1856. Have not verified any information regarding Phoebe but following was posted on an Internet Site: David and Phoebe Greathouse Siders. In the 1880 census in Sutton, Meigs Co., OH, where David is 29 and Phoebe 29. Both were born in WV with all parents born in WV.

Marcellus Greathouse, born about 1859. Have found no further information about him.

Wesley Greathouse, born 1861. Have found no further information about him.
