1799 - Paris District Court: Chancery Case # 3166, Gabriel Greathouse vs Andrew McCreery, Mary McCreery, Richard Morris and others

Daniel Greathouse is perhaps the most famous or infamous American Greathouse because of his involvement in the killing of the family of Chief Logan, which occurred at Baker's Bottom near present-day Newell, WV on April 30th, 1774.

Many have speculated when Daniel died, whether he was married, whether he had children and if he had children, who those children were. Records regarding Daniel's estate have been found in Yohogania County, Virginia.

September 29th, 1778 "Ordered that the administration of the Estate of Daniel Greathouse deceased formerly granted to John Greathouse be revoked and that the same be granted to Mary Greathouse the widow of the said Deceased, she having complied with the Law. Ordered that Edmond Polk, James Campbell Richard Boyce, & Richard Elson or any three of them being first Sworn do appraise the Personal Estate and Slaves if any of the Estate of Daniel Greathouse deceased and make return to Next Court."

It is believed that John was Daniel's brother, and this record establishes Daniel's widow as Mary Greathouse. Later records show she was the daughter of Richard Morris and married second to Andrew McCreery probably around 1780. McCreery descendants have reported that she (Mary Morris Greathouse McCreery) died in 1827 at the age of 70 and is buried in Bethel Church Cemetery, Decatur Township, Marion County, Indiana. Her tombstone reads: "In memory of Mary wife of Andrew McCreery was born 1757 and died in the year A. D. 1827.” It is said that Mary and Andrew had 8 McCreery children. It is believed they went to Kentucky and then Ohio where Andrew died. Mary then went to Indiana to live with her children.

The only child of Daniel & Mary Morris Greathouse was asserted as Gabriel Greathouse, born in January 1777, in declarations given in a lawsuit brought by Gabriel Greathouse against Andrew McCreery, Mary McCreery, Richard Morris and others, before Paris District Court, Bourbon County, KY on August 19, 1799. In this lawsuit, Gabriel Greathouse was challenging the administration of his father Daniel's estate. Gabriel said John Greathouse was first the administrator, but the administration was transferred to his mother. Later papers show there was also a suit against Maurice Morris believed to be Mary's brother and Gabriel's uncle. Andrew McCreery stated that Daniel Greathouse died in 1777 and that Gabriel was about 3 years old when Andrew married Mary Greathouse. Gabriel, in his deposition, said that he was the son and only heir and relic of Daniel Greathouse.
